Terms of Service

Last updated: June 25, 2026

1. Overview

Lecsy (“the Service”) is a lecture recording and AI study application built for international students. It provides real-time English transcription powered by high-accuracy cloud transcription, AI-powered summaries (which can be generated in your native language) and study guides powered by OpenAI, and cross-device transcript sync via Supabase. By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Accounts

Recording and transcription work without an account. To use cloud sync, AI summaries, Exam Mode, and web access, you must sign in with Apple ID, Google, or Magic Link. You are responsible for safeguarding your account credentials and for all activity under your account.

3. Pricing & Subscriptions

Lecsy is free to download. The core Free tier — lecture recording, on-device English transcription, and AI Study Guide — requires no payment and no subscription, and remains available indefinitely.

Optional paid plans are offered under two paths:

  • Lecsy Pro (individual auto-renewable subscription): $9.99 per month with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Pro includes up to 20 hours per month of premium cloud transcription with high-accuracy English captions. After your 20 monthly hours are used, transcription automatically continues on your device (offline, with no additional limit) and the app remains fully functional. Your monthly cloud allowance resets each billing period and does not roll over; unused hours are forfeited. The 20-hour allowance is provided on a fair-use basis for normal individual student use, and we may limit, throttle, or suspend cloud transcription for accounts showing automated, abusive, or non-personal use. Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. The subscription automatically renews at $9.99/month unless it is canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel at any time in your Apple ID subscription settings. Any unused portion of the free trial is forfeited when you purchase the subscription. Prices may vary by region and are shown in the App Store at the point of purchase.
  • Organization plans (schools, universities, language institutes): provided under a separate written agreement between Lecsy and the institution. Pricing is negotiated per pilot or license and invoiced directly to the organization. See lecsy.app/schools.

The Free tier always remains available — paid plans are optional. Subscriptions purchased in the iOS app are billed through Apple In-App Purchase and managed by Apple; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and refunds are handled under Apple's policy. (Any legacy web subscriptions are billed through Stripe and managed from Settings → Manage Subscription.)

4. How Your Data Is Processed

By using the Service, you acknowledge the following data processing:

  • Live audio: Streamed to our speech-to-text engine over an encrypted WebSocket for real-time transcription and is never stored by Lecsy. Lecsy never stores your audio.
  • Local audio file (.m4a): Stays on your device only.
  • Transcript text: Synced to our server (Supabase) when signed in, for backup and web access.
  • AI Summary, Translation & Study Guide: When you tap the relevant button, transcript text (not audio) is sent to OpenAI's API. OpenAI does not train on API content.
  • Billing: Subscription payments are processed by Apple In-App Purchase (in the app) or Stripe (legacy web). Lecsy never sees your card number.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Record or store content that infringes on the rights of others
  • Use the Service for any illegal purpose
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or hack the Service
  • Circumvent security measures or rate limits
  • Use the Service for unauthorized commercial purposes
  • Record individuals without their consent where required by law

Recording consent is your responsibility. Recording laws vary by location — some U.S. states and many countries require the consent of everyone being recorded, and your school or institution may have its own policy on recording lectures. You are solely responsible for obtaining any consent that is required and for complying with all applicable laws and institutional rules before you record. Lecsy provides the recording tool only; it does not obtain consent on your behalf.

5a. Recording Lectures Responsibly

Lecsy is built to help you understand and study your own lectures. Please use it that way. The points below are practical guidance based on how U.S. schools commonly treat in-class recording — they are not legal advice, and rules differ by school and by state, so when in doubt, ask your instructor or your school and consult a lawyer.

When you use Lecsy in class, you agree to follow these principles:

  • Record the instructor's lecture, not your classmates. Many schools allow students to record an instructor's lecture for their own study, but do not allow recording of class discussions, group activities, student questions, or anything involving other students. Stop recording when the class moves into discussion or Q&A.
  • Personal study use only. Recordings and transcripts are for your own learning. Do not use them for any other purpose.
  • Never share, post, publish, or distribute. Do not send your recordings or transcripts to classmates (including those who missed class), post them online, or publish them anywhere. Lecsy has no sharing or publishing feature by design, and you agree not to redistribute recorded content yourself.
  • Follow your school's and instructor's policy. Your institution may require permission to record or may prohibit it in certain classes. That policy applies to you on top of these Terms.

Why this matters: publishing or disseminating class recordings can carry real legal consequences. For example, the University of Florida warns that students who publish or disseminate course recordings may face civil liability of up to $200,000 (see UF's in-class recording policy). Keeping your recordings private protects you — and it is the only way Lecsy is meant to be used.

6. Intellectual Property

The Service and all related content (software, design, text, graphics) are owned by us. Content you create (recordings, transcripts, notes) belongs to you. By using the Service, you grant us a limited license to process your content solely to provide the Service.

7. Disclaimer

The Service is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Transcription accuracy is not guaranteed — always verify important content against the original audio. AI-generated summaries and exam questions are for study assistance only and may contain errors. They are not a certified record and must not be relied upon as a substitute for the original lecture, official course materials, or professional, legal, medical, or academic advice. You are responsible for verifying any information before relying on it. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lecsy and its developer are not liable for any academic, financial, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Service or any content it generates.

8. Account Deletion

You may delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete Account in the app. Upon deletion, all cloud data (account information, transcripts) is permanently removed within 30 days. On-device data (audio files, local transcripts) remains on your device until you manually delete it.

9. Changes & Termination

We reserve the right to modify or discontinue the Service at any time. For significant changes, we will provide reasonable notice. If the Service is discontinued, we will give users adequate time to export their data.

9b. Organizations & Educational Institutions

When the Service is provided to a school, university, or other organization under a separate written agreement, that agreement governs in case of conflict with these Terms. For institutional customers we will, on request:

  • Sign a Data Processing Addendum (DPA) with Standard Contractual Clauses for cross-border transfers
  • Provide HECVAT-Lite responses for security review
  • Operate as a FERPA “school official” with “legitimate educational interest”
  • Negotiate Zero Data Retention with our speech-to-text engine for sensitive deployments

Contact support@lecsy.app for institutional inquiries.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of California.
